This is the single most important section of this guide. And no, it’s not a cop-out telling you why your comics are worthless so we can lowball you. Our Trustpilot and Google Business reviews prove we’re not like that. In fact, this information does the opposite: it teaches you little-known industry secrets that, if you don’t know them, could cost you hundreds or even thousands of pounds in potential profit.
So, let’s start at the beginning. Some people assume that age is what gives a comic book value. Spoiler alert: it’s not. Age is a multiplier, not the core of value. Think of it like a multiplication sign in a math equation. A multiplier needs existing value to multiply. 0 × 1,000 is still zero. The most important factor in comic book value? Key events.
A key event (often called a “key”) is exactly what it sounds like: an event inside the comic that is important enough to affect the story arc - or the comic itself. Simple, right? Wrong. Key events can be notoriously obscure, ranging from the obvious, like Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), to something like X-Men Adventures #1 (1992).
Why is X-Men Adventures #1 a key? Not only did it contain the first appearance of Morph from the animated X-Men series, it also triggered a lawsuit against Marvel for using a Hungarian police show theme tune in the cartoon. Fun, huh?
We’re not teaching you how to identify every key issue here (we have a video in the Fantasy Road Videos section, and Key Collector is the go-to database for this). The takeaway is simple: a comic must have something significant happening inside it to hold value.
A book from 1921 with no key event? Probably worth a fiver.
A book from last week with a major first appearance? Could be worth £100.
It’s often the modern book that holds surprising value.
Condition is the joint-first factor in determining value - after key events. Right now, we’re in what collectors call the age of preservation. Everything can be graded professionally: comics, Funko Pops, VHS tapes, game cartridges - you name it.
Grading preserves, which means that condition now carries around 90% of the value for most collectibles. However, it also means that modern items rarely achieve the astronomical values of older items.
Example: in 2023, the most graded comic in the world was Spider-Man #7, featuring a minor first appearance (Spider-Boy). Despite its rarity, the value is almost nothing due to sheer circulation volume.
Supply and demand drives value. Even a book that seems obscure or unpopular can be worth a surprising amount if it’s rare and in high demand.
Another key factor is the print run. A lower print run = fewer copies in circulation = higher potential value.
Beware of “store exclusives” marketed as LIMITED TO FIVE COPIES! Often, these are just low-budget prints; their value disappears once the store sells them. Unlike publisher-made limited editions, these rarely hold or increase in value. Think of them like a new car: the moment it leaves the lot, you’ve lost money.
Our guide is slightly biased - our goal is to buy your comics -but we’re not here to mislead you. Let’s go through all the ways you can sell comics online, so you can make your own decision.
Organization is key. Blind sales are fine for low-value collections, but for high-value lots, preparation makes a huge difference.
Include title, issue number, and publication year.
Condition doesn’t need to be included at this stage—most comics aren’t worth much anyway.
A trader will identify which comics require detailed images later.
Photographs are a bonus, not a requirement. If someone asks you to document everything upfront, be wary—they may not value your time.
Most comics fall under bulk pricing. A rough count is fine. Tip: make a pile of 100 comics, then replicate the height for larger stacks. Quick, easy, effective.
Once your list and count are ready, head over to our sell your comics page and fill in the contact form. We’ll be in touch.
