How to Photograph Comics and Cards for Accurate Identification
Take sharper, more useful collectible photographs for scanners, valuations and online marketplace listings.
Use broad, even light
Indirect daylight or two diffused lights reduces glare and hard shadows. Avoid a bright ceiling light reflecting directly from a slab, sleeve or glossy card.
Keep the camera square
Hold the lens parallel to the item so borders and corners are not distorted. Fill most of the frame while keeping the complete item visible.
Capture identifying details
Include a straight-on front image, then close-ups of issue numbers, set numbers, labels, barcodes, stickers and defects that affect identification or value.
Do not hide condition
Photograph corners, edges, backs and visible damage. Honest photographs reduce returns and give both automated tools and buyers better evidence.
