Pressing versus restoration
Pressing changes the shape of existing paper through controlled treatment. Dry cleaning removes some surface deposits without solvents or added colour. Neither process should replace missing material.
Restoration alters or adds to the comic in ways intended to return it towards an earlier appearance.
Conservation is another category
Conservation work may stabilise deterioration rather than disguise it. CGC distinguishes conserved and restored work according to its current grading policies and observed techniques.
Labels and terminology can change, so consult current CGC guidance for a valuable or previously treated book.
Disclose what you know
Tell the submitter about previous pressing, cleaning, repairs or suspected colour touch. An honest history helps determine whether standard preparation is appropriate.
