Estimate the comic’s current raw value, its realistic sold value at a conservative grade and the complete grading cost. The difference—not the slab’s headline sale price—is what matters.
Allow for selling fees, postage and the chance of receiving a lower grade than expected.
Reasons beyond resale
A slab can provide independent condition assessment, tamper-evident encapsulation and a certification number. Collectors also grade sentimental books, signature pieces and display copies.
Encapsulation is not the only safe storage method, so do not grade solely because a comic needs ordinary protection.
Red and green flags
Green flags include recognised keys, strong recent demand, scarcity in grade and clean copies with limited defects. Red flags include plentiful modern commons, uncertain variants and a projected margin dependent on an optimistic 9.8.
When in doubt, keep the book raw until better sales evidence or a professional assessment supports the cost.
