Broad grade bands
Near Mint-range comics present exceptionally well with very limited defects. Very Fine and Fine copies show progressively more handling wear while remaining complete and attractive. Very Good, Good and lower grades allow increasingly significant wear or damage.
A single severe defect can cap a grade even when the rest of the comic looks strong.
Why 9.8 is difficult
Modern production, distribution and handling can introduce spine ticks, corner wear, scratches or impressions before a comic is purchased. “Unread” does not mean flawless.
Differences near the top of the scale can be subtle, so a submission should not depend financially on receiving 9.8.
Labels and notes matter too
The numerical grade is only part of the result. Page quality, restoration or conservation findings, signatures and qualified defects can affect the label and market interpretation.
Use CGC certification details and grader notes where available when researching comparable sales.
