Universal and signature outcomes
The familiar Universal label is generally associated with a standard graded comic where CGC does not identify restoration or another condition requiring a different designation. Signature Series treatment depends on CGC’s current witnessing or authentication requirements.
An existing unwitnessed autograph may be eligible for CGC x JSA authentication. Authentication assesses the signature separately from CGC’s grade of the comic, and every signer must be listed accurately.
Qualified and incomplete comics
A comic with a significant defect or missing component may receive a qualified or otherwise distinct outcome rather than the result a submitter expected. Examples can include a missing coupon, detached component or signature outside the applicable programme.
Do not assume an attractive front cover guarantees a Universal label. CGC examines the entire book, including interiors, staples and completeness.
Restoration versus pressing
Colour touch, added pieces, tear seals, replaced staples, chemical cleaning and other alterations may be identified as restoration. The extent and quality of detected work can affect how CGC describes the comic.
Appropriate pressing and dry cleaning do not add colour or replacement material and are generally treated differently from restoration. They still cannot guarantee an unrestored label if earlier work is present.
Conservation has a different purpose
Conservation aims to stabilise or preserve a deteriorating comic, while restoration is generally intended to return appearance or structure towards an earlier state. CGC applies its own current definitions and label policies after examination.
A fragile, mould-affected, water-damaged or previously treated comic should be discussed before routine pressing. Standard pressing is not conservation work.
Disclose known work before submitting
Tell Fantasy Road about known colour touch, repairs, cleaning, replaced components or previous restoration. Disclosure helps assess handling and service suitability, but it does not predetermine CGC’s finding.
For a valuable altered comic, read CGC’s current label and restoration guidance before committing to fees. The market can value restored, conserved and qualified comics differently even at the same numerical grade.
